Karan Samel

Karan is a machine learning Ph.D. candidate at Georgia Tech. His research involves incorporating domain knowledge into deep learning models. This research has been applied across different domains, including natural language processing, computer vision, timeseries analysis, and bioinformatics. He has published work in top machine learning and data mining venues, including NeurIPS, ICLR, KDD, AAAI, and BigData.

During his Ph.D. he worked to apply domain knowledge for ML in industry labs, including Google Research, Amazon, and IBM Research.

Before his Ph.D. he worked in an early-stage startup as a data scientist, where he received a KDD startup research award for his work on active learning for denoising customer data.

Monica Isgut, Ph.D.

Monica obtained her Ph.D. in bioinformatics from Georgia Tech. Her research focused on developing deep learning models to work with large-scale omics and medical history data for disease prediction. She has published work in top journals, including Genome Medicine, IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, and Nature Scientific Reports, among others.

During her Ph.D., she worked at GlaxoSmithKline and cofounded a nucleic acid testing startup based on an issued patent for a bioassay platform technology that she invented.

She previously worked at the Winship Cancer Institute, authoring papers on aging research regarding inflammation, oxidative stress, and telomeres. She also published works on phenotypic screening for combination drug discovery, and the role of natural products as potent combination drugs for cancer.
